Animals evolve adaptations to their environment. The New Zealand fur seal has adapted to life in the water in a number of ways: pounds of blubber prevents heat loss, heart rate slows to use oxygen efficiently, and lungs compress to prevent the bends. These adaptations enable fur seals to dive for up to 15 minutes.

🇻 ertebrates started with the late Cambrian and continue today. This group includes us (humans) and all the other animals with an internal skeleton: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

To understand current vertebrates, we have to go backbone time and study Chordates. Chordates hold the precursors to vertebrate evolution. Instead of a backbone though, they have a notochord. 
Cats have more vertebrae which give them more flexibility. Their caudal vertebrae makes up their tail that acts as a balance.

The earth is estimated at 4.54 billion years old, but could be much older than that. Scientists use elements, like carbon, in rocks to estimate the age. But they are limited with the rocks they find. Some rocks could exist that are older but haven't been dated yet. 
The pancake rocks in New Zealand were formed 30 million years ago. They use to be a part of the seabed, but due to seismic activity they have been lifted up. 
Our knowledge of the world is ever changing and forming a bigger picture of life on earth.

Crabs are modern day examples of invertebrates. They do not have a backbone and instead have a hard exoskeleton. They ate found in many parts of the world in both freshwater and ocean environments.
